What you'll be able to do
- Decide what deserves a boost, what deserves the machine, and what deserves to be left alone
- Match objectives to content honestly (engagement money vs conversion money)
- Split budget between boosted content and structured campaigns without lying to the total
The short version: DAS 100 called the boost button the amateur entrance, then Module 2 carved the one exception: flash-boosting organic momentum. This module is the full doctrine of that exception. Boost content with PROVEN organic traction, from the identity whose voice fits it, with the objective the content honestly serves - engagement money on culture content, conversion money only where a conversion path actually exists. The winners graduate to the machine (Module 5's pipeline); everything else was a cheap test. The budget rule that keeps everyone honest: boosts live inside a capped experimental slice, and the blended MER judges the whole account, boosts included.
The boost, rehabilitated (conditionally)
Let's be precise about why the boost button earned its DAS 100 reputation: civilians boost flops hoping paid rescues them, with default settings, from the wrong identity, measured by feelings. Every part of that is fixable, and fixed, the boost becomes a legitimate instrument - a fast, cheap momentum-capture tool for a multi-node operation producing organic content daily (Module 5's pipeline needs exactly this instrument at step three).
If this is your first rodeo: "boosting" = paying to extend a published post's reach, configured from the post itself. Its structural limits vs Ads Manager are real (fewer options, published-post-only, weaker optimization) - which is why it's the TEST instrument, never the campaign.
The doctrine, in four rules
1. Boost proof, never hope. The nomination criterion is organic traction (Module 5, step two) - content already working with the people who chose to see it. Boosting a flop to rescue it inverts the entire logic: paid amplification of proven organic momentum is a value play; paid life-support for rejected content is a tax on denial. The three-word version: boost winners only.
2. The identity fits the content. Boost from the node that posted it, in whose voice it works (Module 1's matrix). The testimony boosts from the fan node; the milestone from the HQ. Cross-identity boosting (artist account boosting the fan node's gushing) breaks the fourth wall the whole network depends on.
3. The objective matches the content's honest job. Culture content (memes, testimony, milestones) does an ENGAGEMENT job - buy it engagement/reach money and judge it as pool-building (DAS 201 Module 3's announce logic: audience members at pennies). Content with a real conversion path (the smart link, the ticket link) can carry conversion objectives - but a meme boosted for Purchases is a category error the dashboard will punish confusingly. Most boost-tier content is culture content; budget accordingly and honestly.
4. Winners graduate; boosts don't scale. A boost that pops is a signal, not a campaign - rebuild it in Ads Manager on a stable post ID (preserving accumulated proof per DAS 100 Module 7) inside the main structure, with real optimization. Scaling BY boosting harder is running a residency through the suggestion box.
›Go deeper: the budget split and the honest ledger
The operating numbers: boosts live inside a capped experimental slice of total spend - think a modest single-digit-to-15% lane, treated as the exploration budget's little sibling. Two ledger rules keep it honest. First, boost spend COUNTS: it flows into the same blended MER (DAS 100 Module 8) as everything else - "but that was just boosts" is not an accounting category. Second, graduation moves budget, not adds it: when a winner enters the main campaign, its boost lane closes. The failure mode this prevents: death by a thousand $30 boosts - no single one visible, collectively a second ad budget with no optimization, no structure, and no one admitting it exists.
›Go deeper: comment stewardship at boost speed
Boosted organic posts have LIVE comment sections - that's half their charm (real early comments = native feel) and the operational catch: boosting pushes content to colder eyes than organic reached, and colder eyes bring colder comments. The Module 6 (DAS 100) stewardship rules apply at boost speed: seed, answer the logistics question fast, moderate the trolls, pin the best reply - and the cross-node choreography from Module 2 stays plausible. A boosted post with an untended comment section is a party with no host.
From the field
A manager's operation ran the death-by-a-thousand-boosts pattern: no boost over $40, forty-plus boosts a quarter, every one "just a little push," collectively a four-figure quarterly spend with no structure, no post-ID discipline, and no ledger line. The reform wasn't banning boosts - it was the four rules plus the capped lane: winners-only nomination, fitted identities, honest objectives, graduation protocol. Boost count dropped by two-thirds; the survivors were all momentum-captures that earned it; three graduated to the main campaign that quarter and became its cheapest cold performers. Same instrument, adult supervision.
Common mistakes
- Boosting the flop (paid denial)
- Conversion objectives on culture content (the category error the dashboard punishes confusingly)
- The artist account boosting the fan node's praise (fourth wall, broken, on camera)
- Scaling by boosting harder instead of graduating winners to the machine
- The unledgered boost budget - a thousand little pushes that never appear in the MER conversation
Take-home
Boosting Decision Flowchart - the four rules as a one-page decision tree: traction gate → identity fit → honest objective → cap check, with the graduation protocol and the ledger rules on the back.
