The $0, $150, and $500 Release

Facts verified: July 2026Last updated: July 2026Curriculum v2026.1

What you'll be able to do

  • Run the legitimate $0 release playbook (it's a real playbook, not a consolation)
  • Build the standard $150 push and the committed $500 push as repeatable templates
  • Apply the week-three gate that decides which releases earn more

The short version: Three builds, one per budget band. The $0 release runs the machine's free layers: the node network posting in register, the smart link instrumented anyway (data costs nothing), the label list, and the organic read that decides everything downstream. The $150 release adds one platform, warm-first, two weeks: label + artist scopes retargeted on the strongest creative, optimized on smart-link click-throughs. The $500 release runs the full DAS 202 cycle in miniature - announce, pre-save, release surge, and the beginning of a sustain lane. The descent order is law: warm before cold, always, because at these budgets cold discovery is a luxury warm efficiency has to earn. And the week-three gate reads every release the same way: signal → next tier; silence → the machine moves on, no hard feelings, the data banked.

Three builds

First rodeo

If this is your first rodeo: these are templates, not ceremonies - the point of standardizing is that release forty costs the team an hour where release one cost a week. Every build assumes Module 2's architecture (the scopes exist, the smart link is instrumented per DAS 202 Module 4, the nodes are alive).

The $0 release (the honest default)

No ad spend does not mean no campaign:

  • The node network fires in register (label announce, scene-node contextualization, artist canon + their DAS 202 network doing their side per the Module 1 conversation)
  • The smart link goes out instrumented ANYWAY - pixel + CAPI cost nothing, and the $0 release's click-through data is the evidence the week-three gate reads
  • The label list gets the release (email is the label's free surge)
  • The organic read IS the campaign's product: which markets, which creative, what save rate - written into the learnings doc (Module 7)

The $0 release is not a punishment. It's the portfolio's control group, and half the roster's releases should probably be one.

The $150 release (the standard push)

One platform (Meta - this school, obviously), two weeks, warm-first:

  • Week one: LABEL scope + ARTIST scope retargeting on the strongest announce creative, optimized on smart-link service click-throughs (DAS 202 Module 4's event)
  • Week two: continue what week one proved; the best creative earns the remaining budget; a small cold test ONLY if warm efficiency came in strong (the descent order: warm must earn cold)
  • The math check (DAS 100 Module 5): $150 over two weeks on click-through conversions clears the learning bar at typical costs - which is exactly why the event choice matters and "link clicks" would waste the whole band

The $500 release (the committed push)

The DAS 202 release cycle, miniature but whole: an announce week (pool building on video views - cheap reach for the reveal), the pre-save lane (email capture riding), release-week surge (warm everything, same-hour discipline with the email send), and - the tier's real distinction - a sustain lane seeded at week three if the song shows life ($5-10/day per DAS 202 Module 3, funded past this budget by the Module 6 receipts conversation). The $500 release also earns the full creative treatment: three-plus concepts into the exploration lane, because at this spend the creative variety finally has room to work (DAS 100 Module 6).

Go deeper: the week-three gate

Every release, every tier, same read at day 21: saves and save-rate, follows, smart-link click-through cost (where spend ran), market concentration (one city lighting up is a signal, not a fluke), and the organic multiplier (is anyone posting it unpaid?). GATE UP: evidence unlocks the next tier - $0 with organic life earns the $150 push; $150 with strong click-through economics earns the $500 treatment; $500 with real life earns a sustain lane and the Module 6 conversation about more. GATE FLAT: the machine moves on - the release keeps its smart link, its data is banked into the scopes, and nobody relitigates it, because the next release is already loading. The gate's gift to label culture: "not this one" becomes a data outcome instead of a verdict on anyone's worth, and the artist heard the rules in the Module 1 conversation before anything ran.

From the field

A label standardized the three builds and gated everything at week three for a full year. The distribution surprised everyone: roughly half the releases ran $0, a third ran $150, and a handful earned $500 - and the year's two breakout records were both GATE-UPS, a $0 release whose organic read screamed and a $150 whose click-through costs came in at half the label's average. Total ad spend for the year came in UNDER the previous year's, and the label's cost-per-new-listener dropped by more than a third, because money stopped attending release parties and started following evidence. The roster's trust went up with the math, which nobody predicted and everybody should have.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the $0 release as neglect instead of running its actual playbook
  • Cold spend at the $150 tier before warm proved efficient (the descent order, violated)
  • "Link clicks" optimization burning the band's entire learning math
  • Skipping the week-three read (a portfolio with no gate is a calendar with a budget)
  • Relitigating gated-flat releases (the data's banked; the machine moves on)

Take-home

The Three-Build Release Templates - the $0/$150/$500 builds as run-sheets, the week-three gate scorecard, the descent-order rule card, and the gate-up unlock language for the artist conversation.
